The set-up of the exhibition—with more than 110 works among paintings, drawings and sculptures—has followed a chronological as well as thematic criterion as representative as possible of the Fiume large and varied production. We started from a group of “historical” drawings of the 1940s that attracted the enthusiasm of Raffaele Carrieri and Alberto Savinio, together with drawings of the 1960s on subjects such as the Fighting Bulls, the Centaurs, the Anthropotaurus, and the Nymph and Faun.
A curious episode in Salvatore Fiume’s career was what many now know as the Queyo adventure, documented here by two original oils and by an information panel.
A major subject in Salvatore Fiume’s production, second perhaps only to that of the Island of Statues, is the female figure—often to be found even within the island of statues—whose sensuality fascinated him and whose presence appears in a considerable part of the paintings in the Mantua exhibition, encompassing those from the late 1950s called Bull and Woman, the Reclining Girl of 1968, the above mentioned Balinese figures of the 1970s, and paintings of the 1980s and 1990s.
The final large hall that concludes the exhibition hosts five large paintings, four of which belong to the Cycle of the Hypotheses which is composed of 18 paintings.
In them, on the background of images typical of Fiume’s work like the islands of statues, or beside some of his female figures, elements appear from masterpieces of modern painters like Picasso and de Chirico intertwined with pictorial elements from old masters like Botticelli, Tintoretto, Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens, and Velázquez.
The fifth large painting in the last room of the House of Mantegna exhibition is an Island of Statues, a pictorial and compositional synthesis of a large part of Salvatore Fiume’s art.
